Tooth decay is a damaged area in the surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes.
Tooth decay is also called as cavity or caries, and is among the most common health problems especially in children and teenagers.
CAUSES :
Cavities are caused by a combination of factors like
1. Harmful bacteria in the mouth.
2. Frequent snacking in between meals.
3. Consuming more sugary diets and drinks.
4. Improper brushing.
However, a person with no such habits can also get a cavity.
SYMPTOMS:
In early tooth decay, you are usually symptom-less. If left untreated, they get larger and affect deeper layers of your teeth and can lead to the following symptoms :
1. Spontaneous tooth ache.
2. Tooth sensitivity.
3. Sharp pain when you bite or drink hot or cold.
4. Food accumulation between teeth.
5. Black discoloration or holes in your teeth.
6. Chipping of enamel.
Most often you are not aware that a decay is forming, so it is best to have frequent dental visits even when your mouth feels fine.
COMPLICATIONS OF TOOTH DECAY :
If you do not take a tooth decay seriously , it may get complicated and can lead to
1. Swelling or pus around the teeth.
2. Tooth abscess.
3. Broken tooth.
PREVENTION :
Though everyone is at a risk of caries, good oral hygiene can help you avoid cavities.
1. Brushing with a good fluoride toothpaste as fluoride is essential for your enamel strength.
2. Avoid frequent snacking
3. Have frequent dental visits to monitor your caries.
4. Rinse your mouth properly after meals.
5. Children can get dental sealants which is a plastic coating applied on the chewing surface of the teeth.
